Most of us joined a CSA to know the source of our food and have a direct relationship with the farmer providing that food. There may be other reasons you joined from being part of a community to wanting to support local small farmers to just loving fresh veggies and fruit. Whatever the reason, welcome and enjoy!
In the news over the past few years, there have been many mentions of a sort of movement that is growing. Some are calling themselves Localvores and others are part of the slow food movement but no matter what you want to call it, you can't escape hearing about CSA's, Big Agra-business and the White House organic garden. You probably know only too well who Michael Pollen is and if you haven't read one of his books, you've heard him on NPR recently. Even if you don't care now about the source of your food and are just here for the fresh spoils you couldn't get at the local big supermarket, I'll bet by the end of the CSA season, you are going to care. The beauty of food unadulterated by mass production will get under your skin, just like it does all of us who've been here just the year before or all the way to when Hellgate CSA got started.
To help your conversion along, we'll be posting some links to different media coverage of topics relating to being a member of a CSA. Further, if you should see something and want to share, please feel free to type up an email and pass on that information.
This morning on Morning Edition on NPR, Michael Pollen and others were being interviewed in connection with a new summer movie coming out called Food, Inc. which looks to be a documentary intended for wide national circulation and, among other things, is about knowing the source of your food.
