Note from Green Thumb Farm

Mid August and Summer is in full swing! The heat is on and dry weather continues. Tomatoes of all types are looking very good- maybe the best of this century if not longer. Last year no large tomatoes were brought in to any of our CSA groups. This year is so different. The dry heat conditions are ideal for tomatoes!

Cantaloupe and watermelon are also growing nicely as are squash and the beans are now coming in again. On the downside our lettuces, which last year we brought in every week for the first time in 15 years, have now all been lost to the heat. We are irrigating some but lettuce will not be available until later in the season, probably late September. Carrots, beets, scallions and many of our herbs have also been victims of the summer's dryness and heat. So that is the way it is. Every year brings different challenges with some crops doing well and some not so well.  Enjoy what is brought in as it is organic and local and we don't know how long any crop may last!

Turnips, Tat-soi and diakons have all been planted and will be ready sometime in September or October as will sweet potatoes and winter squash. The summer is almost over and it will be kale, rabe and cauliflower time before we know it!

Organically yours,
Farmer Bill
