Nice Article on Urban Planting

Time Out NY has a nice writeup this week about urban farms- they highlight one farm per borough. I think it's important to know that farming is taking place within the confines of New York City, such an urban place for most of us.  The farm they talk about in Queens is the Queens County Farm Museum. From the article:

Occupying the city’s largest swath of undisturbed farmland, the 47-acre farm museum has been operational for more than 200 years. Its apple orchard, livestock and 18th-century farmhouse have long made the site a field-trip favorite. During the late summer, the farm’s chemical-free produce—like heirloom tomatoes, corn and peppers—is sold from its vegetable stand, and fresh eggs are available year-round. Around this time next year, wine from the farm’s vineyard will provide a more adult attraction. According to vineyard manager Gary Mitchell, the grapes—a blend of merlot, chardonnay, and cabernets sauvignon and franc—have flourished in the borough’s loamy soil. Currently in their fourth season of growth, they’ll be bottled next January. The concept of a city vineyard, much like the idea of a working farm in Queens, is sure to lure the curious and disbelieving. “There’s a novelty factor,” Mitchell acknowledges. “But we want to make a decent bottle of wine.” 73-50 Little Neck Pkwy near Union Tpke, Floral Park, Queens (718-347-3276). It's worth reading about the other farms, too! Check out the photos as well.
