exploding melon

I barely put the knife into my fruit-share melon on Saturday...and it blew up. Liquid and seeds shot out in a powerful plume, like a volcano erupting all over my kitchen and me. Really dramatic in retrospect, and REALLY messy at the time! Definitely suitable for America's Funniest.... (if you haven't cut open your melon yet, get out the video camera first).

Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a way to let the fruit farm know?

Hey Hannah!

The melon was definitely too ripe, I'm guessing! Wow! Glad you got a laugh after the fact! Generally, a perfectly ripe melon emits a strong melon smell. The ones we've been receiving are ripe, usually the day of distribution or the day after. Therefore it is best to cut into the melon as soon as possible after distro and cut it up, wrap and refrigerate. It will last a while cut in the fridge.
