Notes from Green Thumb Farm

(Repost of July 31st, 2009 posting)

August is here and the cool damp weather has continued for another month. Our cucumbers and summer squashes have had their yield decreased by over half due to the weather. We’re still waiting to see what the outcome will be on our tomatoes but if this continues it will not be good. We spray no fungicide or other pesticides on these crops so we are very weather dependent.

Our beans and greens are doing well. Beans look good until the end of the season - string beans including green, yellow and purple, 2 types of Romanos. We will also have soy, lima and cranberry beans. Lettuces, also, are doing well - as are swiss chards, fennels, onions and leeks. Herbs are also thriving with the exception of warm weather herbs such as basil.

Every year brings a challenge and this year is no different.

Organically yours,
Farmer Bill
