Notes from Green Thumb Farm

Category:

November is here and our harvesting continues.  Our fall greens - tatsois, pak chois, broccoli raabs, and arugula all are thriving in the cold temperatures.  Our problems with our tomatoes and peppers seem only a distant memory as we begin picking broccolis and cauliflowers.  Lettuces, leeks, celery root, and jerusalem artichoks, thyme, rosemary, and sage are all doing well and will be brought in over the next several weeks.  Winter radishes - china white, china rose, isato rose, black spanish, and japenese daikons will be brought in also - these are delicious grated up and added to salads,

Beets, the Red-Headed Step-Spinach

In June of this year a top 11 list appeared in the New York Times titled "The 11 Best Foods You Aren't Eating". Guess which food was number one! Honestly, I think a lot of people aren't eating them because they imagine that there is a lot of effort involved or they have had them prepared in a way that is unappealing to them. Maybe you had them too sweet or perhaps yours (or, dare I say, Grandma's?) lacked savory flair.

News from Hellgate CSA

Dear Hellgate CSA Member:

Can you believe we only have five more weeks of the CSA?  Crazy that it's almost over!  I think it's amazing that we are still getting string beans, which I always associate with summer.  To counter that, beets are on the menu this week.  Look for a separate "special report on beets" post  with recipes and storage tips.

No Fruit July 8

Category:

Just an FYI to those with fruit shares - THERE IS NO FRUIT THIS WEEK, JULY 8.

Apparently, the farm ran out of fruit!  This is the first time it's ever happened.  Gerry, one of our farmers, blames it on mother nature - strawberries, cherries, and apples are all gone, and the upcoming fruit isn't quite ripe.   Sounds like this season has been a bit out of the ordinary.  They will make it up to us next week with extra fruit.

We apologize for this inconvenience.
